Urfaust

Goethe’s early version of ‘‘Faust’’ is an unfinished scenic fragment, raw and direct, a tragic love story focusing less on the metaphysical, the pursuit after knowledge and power as in the complete “Faust” version. Despite years of study, Faust can not reach the understanding of "what holds the world together at its core". In his desperation he leaves his study, accompanied by a figure named Mephisto who appears out of nowhere. He uses Mephisto's dark powers to seduce Gretchen and thereby pulls her into ruin.
