The family's money is gone. Now the landowner Ranjewskaya is back in the Russian province and her existence is in ruins, solutions are offered: Cut down the cherry orchard, parcel out the land and sell it to nouveau riche city dwellers so they can build their real estate there. However, the Family is proud, ignoring reality and hoping for a last minute miracle. In his play written in 1903, Chekhov describes the clash between the old world and the new world, the consequences of capitalism, and society’s stagnant values.
